Chihuahuas are quick, alert and very courageous dogs built into a compact frame. They have the intuition to anticipate those close to them, thanks to their attractive natural curiosity and their endearing feisty character that leaves them having to have the last word, even when faced with much bigger dogs. All told, Chihuahuas make an ideal companion dog.
Well rounded head in the shape of an apple, a distinctive characteristic of the breed.
Compact and well built, with straight topline, slightly marked withers, short, firm back, very muscular loins, broad, strong croup.
All shades and combinations of colors are permitted.
Large, erect, widely open, broad at the base, tapering gradually to the tip , which is rounded.
Carriage is an important breed characteristic: in action, it is high, forming a curve or a semicircle, with the tip toward the loin region, contributing to the general harmony.
Two varieties: short or long.
Bones of dogs with the proportions of the present-day Chihuahua were found in the Pyramids of Cholula. Some posit that the breed has common roots and was crossbred with Chinese dogs brought by the Conquistadors. What is known for certain is that Chihuahuas have been the smallest dog bred by humans since the early 20th century. A hundred years later, their popularity continues to rise around the world.
